This data visualization project was purely for fun. Lake Crescent is my favorite place in the pacific northwest. Hiking up Mt. Storm King provides the intrepid with an unparallel panoramic view of the Lake’s clear blue reaches. I took inspiration from John Nelson’s diorama cartography to create this tribute to a favorite adventure.

I tracked my hike using a Garmin watch, then pulled the elevation & GPX track data into R for processing. I used the ggplot package to create the inset elevation graph on the lower left. I then loaded this data into ArcGIS Pro and grabbed a publicly available DEM to create a local scene, edited to look like a small diorama. Lots of cartographic tweaking and a few finishing touches in Adobe Illustrator resulted in the layout above.
