Floating Kelp Linear Extent

A New Statewide Spatial Data Synthesis Project

Floating Kelp (Bull Kelp Nereocystis luetkeana and Giant Kelp Macrocystis pyrifera) spatial data in Washington is comprised of a patchwork of datasets that use different methods and exist across different time periods. The last state-wide survey of floating kelp was conducted between 1995 and 2000, and kelp distribution has changed significantly since then. For researchers, resource managers, and conservation practitioners, this represents a critical data gap. As a Nearshore Ecologist at the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, I had an opportunity to fill this gap.

I synthesized 12+ floating kelp data sources to generate a new synoptic view of floating kelp across the state. I built on existing data structures to maximize compatability with other DNR datasets. I used python scripting to automate the analysis workflow and ensure ease of future updates and data additions. The resulting datasets are presented using a suite of Esri communication tools, including an Experience Builder, Dashboard, and two StoryMaps packaged neatly together to enable non-GIS users to access and interact with this important new floating kelp spatial dataset.

I used the Vector Tile Style Editor to create a custom basemap to use across the application. I also drew customized icons by hand that dynamically populate an html/css formatted pop-up to add more visual interest and clear communication of the data.

I created a detailed User Guide which includes many figures and maps, some of which are shown here.
